GROUP EXHIBITION

Constant as The Sun, MOCA Cleveland

June 02 - September 17, 2017

Constant as The Sun is the third in MOCA’s series of regional biennial exhibitions. The title references a line in a poem by Peter Davies titled "Allison," written following the shooting of four college students during protests at Kent State University on May 4, 1970. Constant as The Sun presents newly commissioned and existing works that explore the power and provocation of socially-conscious art and its relevance to the urgent issues we face here and beyond. Bringing together artists from Northeast Ohio and the surrounding area including Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Columbus, the work in the exhibition demonstrates the diverse, often collaborative approaches to portraying, building, and connecting communities.

GROUP EXHIBITION

Footwork, Saint-Étienne International Design Biennale

March 09 - April 17, 2017

Inspired by the shared history of manufacturing and craft in Saint-Etienne and Detroit, Public Design Trust (PDT) explores the future of network-based working models through the metaphor of dance and its relationship to systems planning and the interconnected movements that strengthen organizations and communities. Rooted in the City's rich heritage of social, cultural and political innovation, the exhibition will explore imagined futures as the definition of work itself changes in Detroit.

Grand Circus Magazine presents Personal Space

March 11 - April 22, 2017

Personal Space is an exploration of identity, the human physique, social behavior and our cultural environment. Through performance, interactive installation, and 2d work, this group show invites its viewers to become aware of their personal space, and the way those boundaries may differ from those of the person next to them. All artists are Detroit-based and were selected for their interest in the way bodies interact and situate themselves within their larger, or sometimes intimate, spaces.

Adopting a range of approaches from documentary to fiction, they articulate visions of self situated within interpersonal and historical family contexts as well as broader social frameworks of race, class and gender, often working in collaboration with family members to realize their art. During the exhibition Corine Vermeulen will be in residence and undertake a three-month community-based project photographing residents of the University Area community in exchange for stories of neighborhood and family life.
